Involvement Opportunities!

The Disney II PTA is looking for volunteers to serve as chairpersons for two of our standing committees: Social and Special Projects. Once appointed, these chairpersons will sit on the Disney II PTA Executive Board. Executive Board members are expected to attend monthly PTA board meetings as well as participate in PTA activities and events. Board meetings are scheduled for the first Wednesday of every month in the evening at the school. Responsibilities of each position are detailed below. If interested, please send a brief statement of interest to Helen Lira, helen at chilira dot com.

Social
You’ll plan events to strengthen school community, including bonds among students, parents, staff, and community. A spirit of community, inclusiveness and good organizational skills are job requirements. These events have included monthly parent coffee, movie nights, school non-attendance trips or events, parents' nights out and Back to School fair.

Special Projects
In this new role, you'll evaluate and manage the PTA's support of various special events and projects for/with the Disney II community. These may include the mini-Ravinia 5K run, Educational Foundation ABC Auction, Back to School fair, Fun Fair and other projects/events as needed.

This is your organization and we want everyone to get involved in the areas that meet your interests and talents. Therefore, we have a number of non-voting positions* available. Don't see something here that you'd like to do? Let us know at the meeting on Saturday, November 6th or via email: disneyiipta @ gmail dot com.

Hospitality
In this non-voting subcommittee chair position, you'll coordinate with the Social Chair to plan and execute teacher- and staff-facing events and ongoing programs such as holiday staff luncheon, Teacher Appreciation Breakfast, meals on staff development days, childcare at PTA meetings.

Community Outreach
In this non-voting committee chair position, you'll reach out to various area/community groups and organizations (OIPA, GIPNA, West Walker Civic Association, Portage Park Association, Irving Park Food Pantry) to build relationships and coordinate projects such as mitten/hat and food drives. In addition. you'll work with the social and hospitality chairs to coordinate new-parent events such as back-to-school coffee, incoming preschool and kindergarten events.

Green
In this non-voting new committee chair position, you’ll coordinate all aspects of health and environment—from healthier school lunches to recycling to school gardens—for the Disney II PTA community.

Legislative/Advocacy
In this non-voting new committee chair position, you'll provide critical public policy information and help parents contact their legislators on timely issues to voice their concerns and opinions about what affects our children.

*Due to the limitations of our current by-laws, we have space for only four voting chairs. Depending on interest, we can amend our by-laws as a group to change this in future.

A message from the PTA president

Thank you to all members, parents and teachers who attended the Disney II PTA October meeting, unanimously voting in new PTA leadership that has pledged to deepen and grow our school community. Those leaders are:
  • Helen Lira, vice-president of communications, Helen @ chilira dot com (2nd grade, 3rd grade)
  • Karen Steele, vice-president of fundraising, kpsds @ sbcglobal dot net (1st grade, PK-am)
  • Melanie Zech, treasurer, melaniezech @ gmail dot com(3rd grade)
  • Dianne Kibbey, secretary, diannekibbey @ hotmail dot com (2nd grade, TBPK)
  • Caroline Pollock Bilicki, president, cpollicki @ gmail dot com (2nd grade, K, PK-pm)
I hope that you will reach out to us with your ideas and thoughts about how we can accomplish our mutual goals of a quality education and nurturing environment for every child—at Disney II, within CPS and across Illinois.

New families may have heard Disney II parents talk about winning the lottery when they received their child(ren)’s Disney II acceptance letter. That is no joke! I feel incredibly blessed to be a part of this school community, and I’m confident that we, as parents, can match the dedication of our teaching staff and the drive of our administration. Together, we can make learning fun for everyone.

Our next PTA general meeting is on Saturday, November 6 at 9:30 a.m., before the Parent Academy – coffee and childcare will be provided. I hope that you’ll join us to learn more about
  • our organization and proposed budget
  • membership and how you can get involved
  • each other
During this meeting, we’ll take nominations for two open chair positions within the PTA board: Social Chair and Special Projects Chair. Email your interest in a brief statement to Helen Lira, Helen @ chilira dot com.

I look forward to meeting you soon!

Irving Park Food Pantry

Mrs. Schnaufer's class is featured on the home page of the Irving Park Food Pantry web site. Her class collected the most hats, mittens, and scarves in the PTA's December winter accessories drive to benefit the pantry. A very big THANK YOU to Mrs. Schnaufer and her students for their generosity and for caring about the community.  Your contributions will help many neighbors stay warm this winter.
